The northern most town of Chiang Mai province is 173
from the provincial capital. It lies either side of the Kok River and is usually a transit
point for boat trips to Chiang Rai. Route 107 connects it to Fang and continues to Mae
Chan, north of Chiang Rai. A white siting Buddha overlooks the town
providing a natural photographic panorama. Restaurants are few here and
Thaton accommodation is of a simple standard. Few people plan
the time to stay here overnight but those who do have the chance to sample tranquil river
life-styles of lowland Thai villagers. The northbound road to Burma is not open and there
appears no plans to rectify the situation.
Thaton is linked to Chiang Rai via the Kok river which eventually runs
into the Mae Khong at Chiang Saen. This river trip takes around 4 hours and passes many
tribal villages en-route. |
