Siam Reap
This small unassuming town is 7 kilometres from the
international airport, 7 km from the World Heritage site of Angkor
Wat and 12 kilometres from Tonle Sap lake. Taxi,
pick-ups and motorcyles can arrange transport into town for a few
dollars. The town itself is a fairly scruffy place with
unpaved roads but has a number of good restaurants and can be a
pleasant place to browse. Aesthetically the nicest parts of
town are the old French quarter and the park area opposite the Grand Hotel d'Angkor. The former has many attractive colonial French style
buildings, now utilized as cafes, restaurants and bars. It is
located in the south part of town by the river. The town is not very big although it is not one that lends
itself to strolling. Poor roads and motorcycle taxi drivers,
finding hard to believe that anyone would walk at all, combine to
thwart all but the most determined pedestrian efforts.
It is a fairly new town, most of the buildings less than 10
years old. As if to remind you that you're still in a very
poor country street lighting is nonexistent. The
contaminated by market stalls, restaurants and hotels.
Dining and entertainment.
The is no shortage of places to eat, Cambodian, Thai,
Chinese, French, Western and Japanese cuisine is widely available
and easy to find. Around every hotel there are a number of
places to eat. Prices are generally very reasonable, a good
meal costing between $2-8, more at the larger hotels.
