FOCUS ON: Taichelek (Shan State)

Map of Thailand Across the bridge from Mae Sai lies the Myammar (Burma) city which is mainly visited for half a day from Mae Sai. The town does have an airport and frequent flights to Keng Tung, Heho and Rangoon. Check our news section for the latest details on permitted travel to Burma.

The market is not as extensive as that of it's Thai neighbour but is worth a visit even if just for the experience and visa stamp. Long stay visitors to Thailand should note that their passports will be stamped; canceling their Thai visa. If you have time, a trip to the hilltop temple offers stunning views of the Golden Triangle region and surroundings.

It is unclear as to how far you can travel outside of the city on a day border-pass as it seems to vary with each visit. Figure on 5km

Thai customs will confiscate any Burmese purchased liquor or cigarettes so it is therefore best to restrict shopping to handicrafts and such items.

Immigration and customs clearance is swift and reasonably efficient either side and, if all paperwork (which) is actually minimal) should be completed in a few minutes. Note that paperwork must be checked about one kilometer from the Thai side of the border at the Immigration office (not at the bridge itself!)

Cars, motorcycles and bicycles can all be taken across the bridge and are charged according to size. Although bicycles are supposed to entail a $5 fee it is not always collected.

There are a few temples worth exploring in town and several connecting tribal villages of Shan and Akha.

Eating in Taichilek is rather disappointing with few restaurants offering good fare. Naturally Coke, Pepi and beer are all easily found.
WILDLIFE ALERT! Some traders in this town deal in endangered animal skins such tiger. Please do not support this illegal trade by buying anything from these merchants.
